It's that time again for the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida to start planning for the Annual Everglades National Park Outing.

The Outing gives more than 100 kids the opportunity to see, learn about, and experience the amazingly unique ecosystems, plants, and animals that their home - South Florida - has to offer.  Along with an army of caring adults and rangers, the participating kids learn all about alligators, birds, wetlands, and rocklands while spending the whole day active and outside. Most of the children will be coming from local shelters, group homes, and community-based program.

If you are interested in taking part on this incredible event, please see link to register and volunteer for a team.  If you are unable to join but still would like to provide a donation, you are welcome to do so by logging into the RPCVSF website, rpcvsf.org, and selecting Donations from the Menu on the left side of the homepage, or just click Donations.

For more information or questions, please e-mail Genevieve at: evergladesouting@rpcvsf.org .

We hope to see you on February 1st, 2020!

Please note and pass along to others that arrival time will be at 8:30 am at the Ernest Coe Visitor Center. The breakfast crew and a few others will be there setting up earlier, closer to 8:00. Buses will start arriving after 9.

    A Towering Task

Join RPCVSF to view a new documentary film called A Towering Task, an in-depth documentary about the whole history of the Peace Corps. The film is a thoughtful consideration of the agency’s past that according to the film's website, asks: What role should the Peace Corps play in the 21st century?

For more information about the documentary, click on the following links:

    • 26 Apr 2020
    • 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM
    • A.D. "Doug" Barnes Park, 3401 SW 72nd Ave, Miami, FL 33155 - Shelter # 3
    Register

The Bon Voyage Picnic will be held on April 26th at A.D. "Doug" Barnes Park, Shelter # 3. The picnic and park entrance are free, Rain or Shine. Glass bottles and pets are not allowed in the park.

Please Register so we know how many to prepare for.

    The afternoon’s itinerary:

    2–4 pm

Enjoy visiting with invitees, their families and your fellow RPCVS. Bring photos of your service days to share. Snacks and beverages will be provided, but feel free to bring more! There are also nature trails, a pool, a playground and space around the shelter if you'd like to bring outdoor games. You are welcome to come earlier to enjoy the amenities.

    45:30 pm

Honor the upcoming PCVs and share a potluck meal.  You are encouraged to bring a dish from your country of service.  Several upcoming PCVs and their families have already accepted the invitation, so please be generous with your dishes! If your dish needs to be kept cool or warm until we eat, please bring it in your own insulated container. The shelter does not have refrigeration.

Drinks and kid/adult-friendly sandwiches will also be provided.

See http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/ad-barnes.asp for directions and more information.

Email Patty at pharespl@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Besides a dish and your family, please consider bringing photos from your PC service.  Last year a photo album from Sierra Leone helped calm the fears of parents who were fearful of their daughter going to Africa.  Many of invitees are the first in their family to venture far away from home, even though the parents may be immigrants.  The experience of talking with you will be helpful to invitees and their families, and you will be impressed with the crop of upcoming Peace Corps Volunteers.  You’ll enjoy talking with them as much as they will appreciate talking with you!

    • Namibia

2020 is going to be a great year for traveling. It will probably mark Travel’s last time as a trip leader. Travel will still be available as consultant on international travel for RPCVSF members and friends through the website and newsletter. Share with us your thoughts, inquiries, comments, and most of all, your finds.

This year Travel will be looking hard for BARGAIN packages and different ADVENTURES. We are going to try to make a niche for our members and friends in other vendor’s travel packages. At the moment, Travel is looking at trips for Senegal and The Gambia, giving us a look at French and British northwest Africa; Ghana in British West Africa; Brazil grand excursions including the Pantanal inland delta; the Guianas to give us a taste of British, Dutch, and French culture in South America.

The biggest event of the year takes place August 19, 2020, a special date in the life of Traveland for everyone born in 1940. (also special for Bill Clinton and Tipper Gore but with different years). A fitting place to wrap up being a trip leader, we shall celebrate grandly at Joe’s Beerhouse in Windhoek, capital of Namibia, the most interesting safari country in Africa. Former RPCVSF President Tuey Murdock (Colombia) will be honorary hostess. (Joe’s is the liveliest bar/restaurant in the country, a little like Shorty’s in Miami with an Africa flair and menu features. You thought Impala was a car; it is a great burger.)

Dates, itinerary, and pricing will be announced very soon. High season means a short consideration time.

FYI: Beer in non-Muslim countries south of the Sahara is excellent. Most of those countries have signed agreements with the major breweries of Europe to provide brewers and technical assistance. Namibia has its German and Dutch heritage to provide extra quality. Don’t like beer? The place is afloat with South African wine, still and sparkling. Many of these countries have also signed bottling agreements with the distilleries of the world. Local bottling reduces product price and increases availability. Soft drinks are always available.
