The original building that housed the “Colored Precinct” was dedicated in May, 1950, and served as a segregated base of operations for Miami’s newly formed “Colored Patrol Officers” and newly appointed “Colored City Judge,” in Overtown, the most popular and dynamic black community in the City of Miami at that time. The precinct was the only one of its kind operating in the southeastern area of the United States.
In 1962, a survey of the City of Miami Police Department was conducted and concluded that, due to the high costs of operation, the black precinct should be closed. In 1963, the city abolished the precinct and integrated the 79 black officers into the main headquarters.
Efforts to preserve and restore the building as the museum it is today were supported through funding from the City of Miami, the State of Florida and the City of Miami Retired Police Officers Community Benevolent Association.
