Subject: Supporting a PCV's Family Against Breast Cancer
Dear South Florida RPCVs,
I am a current volunteer serving in the rural Arghakhanchi District of western Nepal, about three months into my service. I work in the food security sector of our program, supporting the development of agricultural resources and methods in partnership with local farmers and families – I'm proud to say that our food security program is currently the only one of its kind within Peace Corps' EMA (Eastern Europe, Mediterranean, and Asia) region.
All volunteers here live and work with local families during their time at site; I have unwittingly joined a family grappling with deep hardship. My brother's wife, Goma, has been diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer, and her medical bills are proving near-impossible for her family to handle. Nepal's health facilities are so poor that she has had to seek treatment in another country – right now she stays at a hospital in Delhi, India, more than a full day's travel away from her 11-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. She has been there for nearly four months now, with no definite end to her visit in sight.
On the recommendation of an RPCV friend, I'm extending my request to RPCVs of South Florida for financial assistance to my family's cause – your support, including the sharing of the below flyer and fundraising page to your Facebook page, is welcome. If you are aware of additional Peace Corps-related fundraising resources or networks that might be of use, please let me know. Thank you – namaste!
All the best,
J.T. Jenkins
